The Viridian club organized a workshop for the students of grade 10 regarding solid waste management on 6th September, 2021 from 8:00 am to 9:00am. The chief guest of the session was Mrs. Vaishali Gupta, a professional in the field of solid waste management. Vaishali ma’am is an assistant professor at the Lady Irwin College at the University of Delhi and holds a PhD in 'Solid Waste Management in Delhi School". She also has more than 10 years of experience in the field of teaching and research and has worked with schools closely towards effective management of solid waste. The session entailed a fruitful discussion amongst the students about different concerns and problems around efficient management of waste, along with the new innovative approaches for properly managing waste in our daily lives.
The proceedings of the session took place with the conduct of a periodic question and answer session, involving a direct face to face interaction with the students. More than 80 students attended the webinar. The students learnt about various methods of reducing waste including but not limited to:
Buying goods in bulk
Opening chips packets from the middle instead of the corners, so that it is easy for the whole packet to be recycled and the corner which is cut out is not wasted
Using bar soaps instead of body washes
Avoiding use of glitter as they contain microplastics
Avoiding paper plates for fried or cooked food as paper plates with oil take a long time to decompose
The workshop was very interesting and students got to know about the unexpected ways in which they contribute to the increasing wastage. The workshop was well-received, evident in the students’ enthusiastic responses and a thought-provoking question-and-answer session following the workshop.
