Orientation on Single-Use Plastic

Updated: Jan 26, 2022

What do we do at Viridian?

Being a part of a club may be daunting to many people, so in order to express to them that we are a bunch of like-minded people who participate in a variety of enjoyable activities together, below is a prime example of one of the events we had this year! This report was compiled not just by club members who have been with us for a long period, but also by student volunteers who volunteered to help us.

Event :

Awareness Presentation on Single-Use Plastic

What precisely did we do?

The Viridian Club, the environmental chemistry club of Sanskriti School had organized a presentation on single-use plastics (SUPs) on September 20, 2021, to create awareness about the negative consequences of single-use plastics and their alternatives. The presentation was in line with Goal 12 of the Sustainable Development Goals, which is Responsible Consumption and Production. This objective focuses on achieving more and better results with fewer resources.

Why is this topic important?

" It cannot be right to manufacture billions of objects that are used for a matter of minutes, and then are with us for centuries." - Roz Savage

Single-Use Plastics, a ticking time bomb for the environment, are plastic commodities that are designed to be used once and then discarded. A plastic straw with our iced coffee, a plastic bag to hold our takeout or a candy bar wrapper. These contemporary luxuries are so common, and so simply discarded, that we rarely consider the destructive impact our plastic addiction has on our seas, animals, and wellbeing.

The planet is facing a grave ecological disaster in 2021. Mother Earth is beleaguered by a slew of concerns, namely global warming, species extinction, pollution-induced degradation of land, water, and air, climate change, water shortages, and so on.

Today, it is critical to share information about the environmental concerns of plastics and other dangerous substances. If we do not take immediate action, we may soon be without a planet to call home. Today's activities will define tomorrow's life. We must do everything necessary to remove plastics and go green by replacing them with biodegradable and environmentally friendly items such as jute and cotton. With the Viridian Club, let us take a step toward a greener, cleaner, and happier Earth.

How did we portray this issue?

Viridian went above and beyond in researching the aforementioned issue and ensuring that the importance of the matter was highlighted. While the presentation emphasized the myriad issues connected with plastics through interactive debate and visuals, it also urged students to explore alternatives to single-use plastics and do their best to assist the environment in little ways.

It was an opportunity for us, students, to pause and consider the repercussions of using plastic just because it is easy. Working with Viridian is always a fantastic experience as it actually stands for a good cause that motivates us to not just think but also act.

How was the Presentation Delivered?

Several passionate members of our club volunteered to help with the presentation and were assigned different jobs. The presentation was designed for all 10th & 6th-grade sections.

Our Club President, Vice President, and volunteers worked together to create a Google Slides presentation for the event. Everything came together beautifully, and we completed our necessary preparation in under two days. Our presentation featured videos and graphics that highlighted the harmful repercussions of SUPs as well as the various ways we might make a difference.

What did the volunteers do?

Each volunteer was assigned a specific task to help with the presentation. To guarantee that the event flowed successfully throughout all segments, one volunteer was assigned to each section of the grades, along with two backups.

The volunteers introduced the slides and presented information about single-use plastics throughout the lecture so that students were aware of the dangers of using SUPs. After that, the audience was asked a few questions, making the event not only informative but also engaging and fun!

Our amazing audience offered us an abundance of insightful and one-of-a-kind responses. We were available to answer any questions, and at the end of the presentation, the links to the various videos presented were also shared with everyone who wanted to see them.

The students were enthusiastic in learning about SUPs and not only recognized the necessity of making sustainable choices by saying no to plastics, but they also had a good time while engaging in a spirited debate with the volunteers.

This simple event demonstrates how we, as a group, collaborate to address serious environmental concerns by studying and learning together.
