Reducing Single-Use Plastic Pollution by Advay Iyer 11-A

Updated: Jan 8, 2022

When we take a look at an overview of our life, we would notice the urban usage of plastics, be this be single-use or permanent. Plastics have become an integral part of urban and municipal usage performing a wide variety of functions easing every aspect of our lives. The plastics which damage our environment the most however are single-use plastics. For some tasks we perform, plastics are essential and cannot be unaccounted for, but for daily disposable usage, these plastics can be replaced.

Plastics are non-biodegradable synthetic materials that are made mainly of polymers. Polymers are long connected chains of molecules. Fossil fuels, a general term we hear in our lives, are responsible for the degradation of the Earth’s atmosphere. Furthermore, fossil fuels are one of the main raw materials which are converted to plastics by polycondensation.

During the production process, when fossil fuels are burned, large amounts of CO2 and other greenhouse gases are found to be present in the air. This causes an imbalance in the greenhouse effect, thereby leading to global warming. The production and non-disposable

nature of plastics is the reason to refuse them. Even after treatment, disposal always may leech harmful chemicals derived from its nature.

Humans play the role to revive greenery and better the planet because they are the reason for its deterioration. While every single Homosapien can play their part, let's see how we as the youth can take forward this journey and set our future to accommodate our goals.

AWARENESS AND IMPLEMENTATION

Treason resolves any national/global issue, each of us can play our part. The first is spreading awareness. Though one may appear naive, or be ignored by others for his efforts in educating the wider public, awareness is always a beneficial factor to the improvement of society. Once one begins to notice that he/she needs to change, a sense of growth is instilled in them and they begin playing their part by the repeated efforts of others. How can one spread awareness! Awareness doesn’t include only sharing posts on social media or public platforms. To spread awareness, you need to be an active listener and an active participant. To comprehend what your role is you need to learn from others. This can be achieved only by being an active listener.

Now, online live sessions, e-posters, young students giving presentations in municipalities all contribute to the bigger greater need and are of utmost importance to tackle any problem. Starting social media campaigns as a part of a larger group can also have positive effects. To implement your teachings, you can demonstrate how one can work their way forward. Each of us must be an active participant and should contribute in many ways. Plastic reduction drives, plastic collection drives, Multilayer plastic packaging recycling drives are just a few of the many thousand open-minded ideas one can take up. Internships, research papers, co-curricular projects are all encouraged to widen one's scope of learning and awareness. Aside from these, setting up collectives/clubs in condominiums and societies can also lead to growth in many important aspects. Overall, to conclude, we notice that each one of us plays a crucial role, to avoid single-use plastics and encouraging alternatives.
