A Trash Bin to Jackpot by Aishani Purohit 7-D

“The ground's generosity takes in our compost and grows beauty! Try to be more like the ground.” - Rumi

When I initially arrived in Himachal a year ago, I was unfamiliar with phrases like "organic" and "compost." Discovering them amazed me, and I was interested as to what they represented. Everything we regularly eat at my maternal grandparents' house is local, organic produce grown with handmade 'compost' and no synthetic or artificial fertilizer. So, according to my grandfather, this was the bare minimum we could do to minimize the effects of greenhouse gases. One of the easiest ways we can help the environment is to recycle food scraps and other organic debris. Aside from that, he provided me with some fantastic composting ideas, recommendations, and explanations.

I've included a few of his suggestions below :

  • Organics are the major components of our waste in everyday life. We can surely recycle our food leftovers considering we can't recycle metal, plastic, or glass.

  • They use compost to increase soil health and decrease pollution.

  • Compost vegetables are chemical-free and natural.

  • Composting makes us more conscious of how much food we waste and encourages us to make less wasteful food choices.

  • A compost pile is more than simply a mound of organic waste; it can also include leaves, grass clippings, clipped shrubs, and other items.

  • Compost acts as a soil amendment, enhancing our soil's physical, chemical, and biological qualities.

  • He also told me that composting does not require a lot of space and that in larger cities, we can attempt indoor composting.

  • Compost aids in the addition of extra water to the soil and hence helps maintain the underground water table.

  • He claims it's the most effective method to turn a garbage can into a jackpot. As a result, food waste becomes a valuable resource.

As a result of the adage "the more we share, the more we have," this treasure trove in our backyard garden not only provides pure and nutritious veggies and fruits for us, but also for neighbors, relatives, and friends. Nothing goes to waste when you compost; everything goes back to the earth to help it grow new life. Well, I learned essential composting skills from my grandparents, who taught me that composting is not only an "Art," but also a "Science" with several advantages.
