How Can We Go Green? by Kritika Roy 10-A

Updated: Jan 8, 2022

India has committed to eliminating single-use plastic by 2022. While attempting to achieve this massive but critically important aim, we must also engage in several additional actions to restore the healthy environment that has been quickly deteriorating in recent years.

If an individual wishes to go green, the three essential guidelines to follow are reducing, reuse, and recycling. Reduce, as the name implies, is the first step toward plastic waste management and environmental sustainability. Reduce the quantity of hazardous and non-biodegradable garbage you generate. Although reuse and recycling are two distinct concepts, many people are perplexed by them. Reuse occurs when an object may be used more than once, but recycling occurs when we create something new from an object that would otherwise be discarded. Recycling is the most effective means of protecting the environment by lowering carbon emissions. Recycling aids in the reduction of waste goods that might pollute water and land.

Rethink is an addition to the three 'R's, which indicates we should think about our activities and their consequences, as well as how they affect the environment.

The three 'R's – Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle – are all about reducing the amount of trash we make, reusing things as much as possible, and remembering to recycle any materials that may be reused.

As members of the Viridian club, the environment club, we are always challenged to come up with creative ideas for club days and school activities. We live in the twenty-first century, thus we have an abundance of resources, but resources are useless if they are not exploited. School events may necessitate the use of hazardous single-use products, which we must avoid.

Although it seems to be a difficult task, there are numerous alternatives we may utilize instead of utilizing materials and items that ultimately cause the destruction of our environment. Reusable and biodegradable materials can be used in place of plastic cups, plates, forks, and spoons. Bagasse is a very durable material used in food packaging that is similar to cardboard. It costs slightly more than plastic but is completely biodegradable.

Bioplastics manufactured from wheat, potatoes, palm or pineapple leaves, and cornstarch can be used to replace single-use plastic bags. These are biodegradable materials that are often utilized. The possibilities described above are only a handful among hundreds. Going green can inspire others and thereby prevent them from committing other crimes against our environment that they are unaware of.
