How AI and Technology can help in Sustainable Development by Kartikeya Singh X-E

Artificial Intelligence is one of the fastest growing sectors in the world today under the realm of technology, revolutionising human civilisation like never before. Artificial Intelligence has invaded almost all facets of life, and can help solve big problems in just a matter of a few moments. The question arises: if Artificial Intelligence has helped mankind in so many ways, can it also help to counter environmental degradation and ecological damage?

A report from the International Energy Agency estimated that artificial intelligence control systems such as Xcel Energy’s neural networks could reduce nitrous oxide emissions by 20 percent. One of the most important aspects under this include Autonomous and electrically connected vehicles. These vehicles are powered through Artificial Intelligence softwares and electricity. Under Artificial Intelligence, this is one sector which can help mankind tremendously if judiciously used and developed, especially in India. AI Guided Autonomous vehicles or AVs, can not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also come equipped with a lot of technological tools. Advanced sensors, cameras, radar, lidar, etc., allow them to get a better understanding of the routes and pathways of a region. If such vehicles begin to be used in India, we can substantially reduce the dangers of global warming, and road accidents: a cause of death for 64.4% Indians per annum.

Another way AI can aid in Sustainable Development is in Disaster Management and Calamity analysis. More than 160 million people across the world are under the constant threat of natural disasters every year. The Software can use simulations and real-time data (including social media data) of weather events and disasters and inform communities and people in danger, well before the disaster strikes. It can also quickly carry out mapping and surveying procedures throughout the region and inform the people the best place to seek refuge. In India, 4 students of IIT – Madras have built drones that can identify people trapped in disaster hit areas and then send in their data and information to the respective authorities and relief teams so they can be provided with the required care.

There is simply no limit to how much AI can change the world. Combining sustainability and Artificial Intelligence will accelerate the productivity and innovation of a country. According to various studies, it has the potential to add US$957 billion or 15% of India’s current GDP to the Indian Economy. Artificial Intelligence is the map for entering a whole new era of development and innovation.
